Introduction to Bachata
Bachata is a vibrant dance and music genre originating from the Dominican Republic and is known for its romantic melodies and themes of love, heartbreak, and longing. The songs feature guitars, bongos, and the güira, from which the music creates an infectious rhythm, while the dance is marked by intricate footwork and body movements that foster connections. Originating early in the 20th century from a blend of African rhythms and Spanish guitar, bachata gained popularity in the DR in the 1960s and 1970s, and achieved international acclaim in the 1990s with artists like Aventura and Romeo Santos. Today, it is appreciated and danced worldwide, bridging cultural gaps and creating friendships between strangers.
Class Structure and Learning Experience
At BM our Bachata classes begin with a dynamic rhythmic warm-up to prepare the body and mind for dancing. The rest of the class is then broadly broken into two sections:
Individual - In this section the focus is on mastering footwork and body movements individually. It is important to ensure our movements and rhythm is correct, and that we can complete it in time with the music before trying to do it with a partner. This creates a safer experience, will help you understand the breakdown of the move, and will enable you to learn the moves faster to a better standard.
Partner work - Once we have mastered the movements individually, we are then ready to come together and learn how to initiate and execute the move with a partner. Here you will learn the signals and responses common in partner dancing, allowing you to choregraph and react to each other and the music as a song progresses.

Progressive Learning Approach
By delivering structured courses, we will develop your skills progressively over a period of weeks. Each class builds upon the last, introducing new concepts and moves systematically. By learning in this way we can concentrate and focus on building strong fundamentals ensuring a solid foundation for more advanced techniques. You won't be expected to master everything we cover in a single class, there are chances to recap, practise, and improve things over time.
Understanding Bachata Music
Additionally we include an exploration into bachata music structure and rhythms. By taking time to learn these you will be able to make predictions and respond to musical signals while dance is taking place. Combine this with an insight into the traditional instruments used in bachata music, we will be able to enhance your appreciation for the art form.
Connection and Energy in Dance
An important concept we discuss in our classes is the significance of connecting with a partner during dance. Without connection you may as well be dancing on your own, we share tips and techniques on how to build connection and enjoy a shared experience of dance between yourself and your partner.
This also comes with understanding the energy of the song, your partner, and the dance. By understanding the energy dynamics and how to synchronize with your partner's movements and feelings, you will create better shared experiences during your dancing. Awareness of these elements will allow you and your partners to have more enjoyment and create a positive social atmosphere.

Exploring Different Styles of Bachata
The bachata lessons at BM also aim to ensure you are introduced to various styles of bachata. To understand where the dance is rooted, and where it began, is important when learning the style. However, it is also important, particularly in the UK, to understand the different fusions that have developed. This is particularly true since popular styles developed recently now have a very different look to when the dance was first created.
By introducing you to various styles of bachata, we will expand your versatility, and allow you to dance bachata in many different locations around the UK, Europe, and the world in a safe and respectful manor.
